Tips for a stress-free Christmas

Sure, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for many, it can also be the most stressful time of the year. Overspending, arguments with relatives, keeping kids busy… all of this can add up to big headaches and often heartaches.

1. Reign yourself in
Going overboard at Christmas – whether it be over-catering, over-spending or overdoing it with kids activities – can be the cause of a lot of holiday stress. Resist the urge to overdo it. Make a shopping list, for gifts and food, and stick to it.
2. Good enough is good enough
Repeat after us… “It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be perfect.” If the tree is a little wonky, or the pavlova is cracked, don’t stress about it. Christmas and the holidays is about family, friends, and happy times, not achieving perfection.
3. Delegate
You don’t have to do every single thing yourself. Now is the perfect time to delegate. Send someone to the shops, get the kids to help with some of the cooking… whatever it is, make sure you have all the help you need. Visitors especially are often grateful for something to do.
4. Travel smart
If you are travelling for Christmas, do yourself a favour and pack light. If you are taking presents, choose gift cards that can be purchased at your destination.
5. Have fun
Above all else, have fun. Make this your number one priority. If what you are doing is causing stress or fights – like dragging the kids to a relative’s place, or insisting on hand-making the Christmas pudding – consider not doing it. Live by this mantra – if it’s not fun, it’s not on.
